Preparing for ESOS Phase 4: Compliance Checklist
The Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) is a mandatory energy assessment scheme for large organizations in the UK. As we enter Phase 4, the requirements have become more stringent, with a greater focus on actual implementation and carbon reduction, rather than just "ticking the box."
Are You In Scope?
ESOS applies to any UK undertaking that has 250 or more employees, OR an annual turnover exceeding £44m and an annual balance sheet total exceeding £38m.
Phase 4: What's New?
The Environment Agency has signaled that Phase 4 will require more granular data and a clear "Action Plan" that must be signed off by a board-level director. Failure to comply can result in fines of up to £50,000 plus daily penalties.
The Compliance Checklist
- Lead Assessor: Appoint an approved Lead Assessor to oversee the audit and sign off the report.
- Total Energy Consumption: Calculate your total energy use across buildings, transport, and industrial processes.
- Significant Energy Consumption: Audit at least 90% of your total energy use.
- Action Plan: Develop a detailed roadmap for implementing the identified energy-saving opportunities.
