The Myth of "Green" Energy Procurement

Many UK businesses proudly claim to be "100% Renewable" because they are on a green tariff. However, in the world of energy procurement, not all "green" is created equal. To avoid greenwashing and ensure genuine environmental impact, businesses must understand the difference between REGOs and PPAs.

REGOs: The Paper Trail

Most standard green tariffs are backed by REGO (Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin) certificates. These are essentially pieces of paper that generators sell to suppliers. A supplier can buy "brown" electricity from a gas plant and then buy REGOs separately to "green" that electricity on paper. This does not necessarily result in new renewable energy being built.

PPAs: The Gold Standard

A Corporate PPA (Power Purchase Agreement) is a direct contract between your business and a specific renewable generator (e.g., a new wind farm). This provides "additionality"—your commitment directly funds the construction of new renewable capacity. It also provides long-term price stability, protecting you from wholesale market volatility.

Transparency in Reporting

As ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) reporting becomes more rigorous, auditors are looking beyond REGOs. Businesses that can demonstrate direct PPAs or on-site generation will have a significant advantage in securing investment and winning contracts.

Match Energy helps you navigate the complexities of green procurement. We ensure your energy strategy is not just compliant on paper, but has a genuine, measurable impact on the planet.
