As we architect the next generation of commercial infrastructure, we are looking back to one of the world's oldest materials: Timber. Modern engineered timber, such as CLT (Cross-Laminated Timber), is proving to be the superior choice for low-grid, high-performance commercial buildings.

The Thermal Advantage

Timber is a natural insulator. It has a significantly lower thermal conductivity than steel or concrete, meaning it is much easier to create a "thermal bridge-free" building envelope. This reduces the size (and cost) of the heating and cooling systems required.

Embodied Carbon: The True Metric

While operational carbon (energy used) is important, embodied carbon (carbon emitted during construction) is becoming the new regulatory focus. Concrete and steel are carbon-intensive to produce. Timber, however, sequesters carbon, acting as a "carbon sink" for the life of the building.

Speed and Precision

Engineered timber is prefabricated off-site using CNC precision. This allows for incredibly tight tolerances, which are essential for achieving the air-tightness required for Passivhaus standards. It also reduces on-site construction time by up to 30%, minimizing operational disruption.
